Other Families

Hi guys,
Emily is trying to walk on her own with her new prosthesis but is still struggling. I was just wondering if there was any families taht lived close to Huntington, WV that has achild with PFFD or that goes to Shriner's in Lexington, KY that we could get in touch with. Hope to hear from someone soon.

When our daughter got her first prosthesis, it took her about 4 months before she was comfortable walking on her own. The waiting was harder on me than her. Each child is different. Emily will walk when she's ready.

My son Miles went to Shriner's in Lexington 1 1/2 years ago and had surgery. He has unilateral PFFD and falls between a class C and D. We get his legs made at Hangar Prosthetics in Louisville, Ky. and his therapy at Frasier Rehab also in Louisville. We still go to Shriner's every six months for check ups and he is still going to require one more surgery. It's a long process, but she'll get through it. We have cycled through therapy every year since he was born. He went for about 4 months when he first learned how to walk at 1 year old with the aide of a brace to make up for the length descripancy. He then had to go back at 20 months old after his surgery when he was fitted with a nonbending prosthetic leg. We then went back again this past fall at 2 1/2 when he was fitted with a bending leg. We are preparing to go again now because he is getting another leg with a different kind of knee. He took to his prosthetic leg pretty well after his surgery because he was already used to walking with the help of a prosthetic device. We've just really being stuggling with his gait because of him having a prosthetic knee.

You must live in Louisville. So do we....we should get together. My son, Grayson will be 4 in June. What is interesting is that you go to Hangar instead of having Eric (@ Shriner's) make your legs. I am pretty sure that is where he used to work and he is sooooo fabulous. Feel free to email me @ bluegrasstrout@insightbb.com
