Driving A Standard?

My PFFD affects only my left leg. Unfortunately though, I have no knee. Right now I'm about two inches short. Can anyone in a similar position drive a stick? If you can, is it overly difficult for you? How exactly do you do it? Thanks.

There are special controls for manual transmission vehicles. I do not use them because both my arms are affected by my disability and after trying a set on a friend's vehicle, I was not impressed. There are several versions of these adaptive conrols that I know of from trade shows and friends. One is a pull ring system (similar to race car drivers), one is a button system, and the one which is the oldest (as far as I know) and which may interest you the most...... it uses your upper thigh or knee on a side pedal that depresses the crutch. This is the one I tried and if my upper arms had not been an issue, then I would have been impressed.

You need to se if you have a restriction on your drivers license and if you do, see what your state requires to remove it.

I would suggest googling "leg amputee manual transmission controls" or trying a free disability product search at www.abledata.com If you still do not find it, email me and I will send you some links.
